Q1. What is Memory Stick
PRO? A1. Memory Stick PRO is an advanced media format that
incorporates various capabilities and expandability, such as high capacity, high
speed technology and data protection technology. All the advanced technologies,
working in concert with optimized Memory Stick PRO format-compatible devices,
enable various applications including real-time recording and playback of
high-resolution moving images. The combination of the media of this format and
compatible devices brings a new level of high quality digital playback and
capture, enabling users to view, listen to and enjoy incredibly rich
entertainment. The Memory Stick PRO format offers Memory Stick PRO media and
Memory Stick PRO Duo media.
Q2. Is the Memory Stick PRO format a
proprietary Sony technology? A2. The Memory Stick PRO media
format was developed jointly by SanDisk and Sony Corporation.
Q3. Why was the Memory Stick PRO
format developed? A3. Similar to how DVD represents the
evolution of disc-based technology, the Memory Stick format is the evolution of
ultra-portable IC recording for music and video applications. Like DVD and CD
technologies, the current Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO formats can
co-exist, providing different options and benefits for different needs.
Q4. How do users distinguish between
the different formats? A4. The Memory Stick PRO format
retains the same form factor (size and shape) as the current Memory Stick
format. However, Memory Stick PRO media is distinguished by a different logo and
design. Most Memory Stick PRO compatible devices have the corresponding "PRO"
indication near the media slot.
Q5. What is the transfer rate of
Memory Stick PRO media? A5. The maximum theoretical
transfer rate of Memory Stick PRO media is 160Mbps (20MB/sec), although the
actual read/write speed is dependent upon the interaction between the host
device and media. The minimum write speed has been standardized at 15Mbps* to
meet the requirement of real-time recording of high resolution moving
image.
* Can be obtained when used with optimized Memory Stick
PRO-compatible hardware with 15Mbps or higher transfer speed.
Q6. How much content can a 1GB
Memory Stick PRO media hold? A6. The following are examples
of data that can be contained on a single 1GB Memory Stick PRO media.
| Sixteen CDs (calculated at 64MB per CD) |
| 360 JPEG images with 5-megapixel quality (fine mode
compression) |
| = digital images equivalent to 10 rolls of film. |
| Approximately 24 minutes of DVD quality video |
| Approximately 6 hours of MPEG4 (384Kbps) moving
images |
Q7. Who will be the users of the
Memory Stick PRO media? A7. Initially, the users of Memory
Stick PRO media will be early adopters and professionals who have higher storage
needs for their personal and professional applications. As the media format
grows in acceptance, Memory Stick PRO media will spread among a variety of
users, enabling them to enjoy incredibly rich content on a single stick.
Q8. Are current Memory Stick media
forward compatible with Memory Stick PRO hardware? A8. Yes,
all the current Memory Stick media can be used on Memory Stick PRO compatible
devices.
Q9. Do Memory Stick PRO media work
in current Memory Stick compatible products? A9. Memory
Stick PRO media cannot be read by current Memory Stick compatible devices, but
PCs can accept this media through the use of an appropriate PC card adapter or
USB reader/writer. In contrast, Memory Stick PRO compatible devices are
optimized for compatibility with all media (current Memory Stick and Memory
Stick PRO media).
Q10. Can Memory Stick PRO media
compatibility be implemented through a firmware or software
upgrade? A10. Technically, firmware/software upgrades are
possible to create Memory Stick PRO format compatibility in some product
categories.
Q11. What will happen if a Memory
Stick PRO media is inserted into a non-Memory Stick PRO compatible
device? A11. Depending on the hardware, an error message
may appear.
Q12. What is Access Control Function
(tentative name)? A12. It is a unique personal data
protection technology offered as one of the expanded functions of the Memory
Stick PRO format. Combining a sophisticated locking device and a unique secured
key, this function provides control over access to and recording of data inside
the media. |
