USB 3.0 FAQs

What is USB 3.0?

USB is the industry specification standard for the connective technology we have all become accustomed to for over 3 decades now. USB 3.0 is the most recent and current third generation of the USB technology and was released originally in 2008.

What is the difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0?

Among the improvements, USB 3.0 features a new transfer mode that transfer data at a rate much faster (up to 10x) than standard USB 2.0 drives. USB 3.0 connectors are easily distinguishable from their 2.0 counterparts by the blue color-coding of the ports and sometimes have the SuperSpeed (SS) symbol on them. To realize the benefits of USB 3.0, you must have 3.0 ports on the device you’re plugging into.

Is USB 3.0 backwards-compatible?

Yes. While 3.0 drives are backwards compatible to 2.0 ports, they will only reach the transfer speeds of 2.0 drive.

Is USB 3.0 the most recent version?

Two newer versions available are the USB 3.1 and most recently, the USB 3.2.

USB 3.1 Generation 1 is almost identical in speed with the 3.0 as they run at the same speed. But USB 3.1 Gen 2 doubles the speed from the 3.0!

USB 3.2 was released in 2017 to support the USB Type-C connector to reach the mass market. 3.2 speeds are comparable to the original 3.0 counterpart.
